Hibiscus (Hibiscus spp)

Hibiscus is a striking, floriferous ornamental plant valued for its large, exotic flowers and glossy green foliage. Depending on the species, it can be grown in the garden, on the terrace or in containers.

Category:

The genus Hibiscus includes many species and cultivars with flowers in white, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple shades. Tropical hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) flowers for a long period in warm weather and is usually grown in containers in temperate climates. Hardy species such as Hibiscus syriacus can be planted outdoors. A warm, sunny position and fertile, well-drained soil encourage abundant flowering.

Care

Water regularly during the growing season and do not allow the potting soil to dry out completely. Ensure good drainage for container plants. Feed regularly in spring and summer with a fertiliser for flowering plants. Remove spent flowers if desired. Tropical hibiscus should be moved indoors before the first frost and kept in a bright, frost-free position. Hardy species can remain outdoors through winter.
